Founding History
In 13th October 1993, the Baraza Kuu, AIC Kenya’s top decision-making body, resolved to commemorate 100 years of the church by building a national church. Thus, AIC Milimani Nairobi was born, strategically located on State House Crescent, off State House Avenue, an area chosen for its accessibility and the absence of other AIC churches nearby.
On 17th April 1994, AIC Milimani Nairobi was founded as a beacon of faith and community, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Kenya. The establishment of AIC Milimani was inspired by the church’s centennial celebrations.
The Founding Visionaries
The vision of AIC Milimani was brought to life by a group of dedicated leaders and congregants. Among the key founders and early leaders were Rev. Dr. Stanley Mutunga, Rev. J. Kitur, H.E. Daniel T. Arap Moi (the 2nd President of Kenya), H.E. Dr. William Ruto (the 5th President of Kenya), and other influential figures like Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Dr. Lazaro Sumbeiywo, Abraham Kiptanui, and several distinguished families, including the Nthiwas, Wawerus, Muchiris, Cheruiyots, and many others.
These pioneers were united by a shared vision to create a church that would serve as a spiritual home for all who sought a closer relationship with God. Their commitment and dedication laid a strong foundation for the church’s growth and development.
The Early Days: Challenges and Triumphs
The early years of AIC Milimani were marked by both challenges and a deep sense of community. The initial congregation consisted of 24 members, mainly drawn from the founding families.
Infrastructure was a significant challenge, as the church started from scratch without the support of an established congregation. Services were initially held in a borrowed tent, which had to be moved seven times as construction progressed. When it rained, the grounds turned into a swamp, making it difficult for the congregation. At one point, congregants even brought their own seats from home.
Despite these hardships, the small congregation remained united and supportive of one another. The church grew as one big family, with each member’s joys and struggles shared by the entire congregation. This close-knit community mirrored the spirit of the early church, where love and mutual support were the cornerstones of their fellowship.
One particularly heartwarming story from the church’s early years involves the regular attendance of H.E. Daniel T. Arap Moi, who, despite the challenging conditions, faithfully attended Sunday services, whether in the tent or the cold basement where the congregation eventually settled as the church building took shape.
Growth and Impact
From its humble beginnings, AIC Milimani quickly established itself as a pillar in the local community. The church’s commitment to evangelism and missionary work began almost immediately, with support for various missionaries both locally and internationally.
One of the church’s early and impactful initiatives was the establishment of a Teens Ministry, separate from the Youth Ministry, to cater specifically to the unique needs of young people aged 13 to 19. This program has been instrumental in shaping the spiritual lives of the church’s younger members, providing them with the guidance and support they need during a critical stage of their development.
Over the years, AIC Milimani has continued to grow and evolve, both in terms of its physical infrastructure and its spiritual outreach. While the original architect’s vision for the church building is nearly complete, the church remains focused on its foundational mission: To spread the love of Christ and minister to a hurting world.
A Legacy of Love and Service
The founding values of AIC Milimani, rooted in the teachings of the Apostles and Prophets with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone, have guided the church’s development from its inception. This commitment to biblical principles has fostered a strong sense of family within the congregation, growing into a vibrant community that spreads the love of Christ both locally and globally.
AIC Milimani stands as a testament to the power of faith, community, and perseverance. The church’s journey from a small gathering to a thriving congregation is one of triumph over adversity, driven by the unwavering commitment of its members and leaders to serve God and one another. As the church looks to the future, it remains steadfast in its mission to be a biblically mature community of believers, dedicated to worship and service in Christ’s name.
